How does our programme meet the needs of our clients

Choosing the topic for our makerspace we was based on the Libraries Development Plan 2016 - 2020 (dlr  Libraries, 2016) and patron’s information needs assessment which was done by a survey . A makerspace - storytelling through jewellery making is a programme that is a connection of simple manual skills with the educational value of storytelling. Combining the ease of entry, the draw toward community, and the satisfaction of completing something with hands and hand tools makes these tasks well fit to the makerspace ethic (Burke, 2014). In a public library context, choosing a universal topic for a workshop may be more challenging due to the variety of interests of users. Therefore, taking into account that patrons wanted more storytelling overall, more activities for adults and the library to be used as a community spot we decided that focusing on this aspect will be common ground for most of the patrons. However, need for a programme developed by us can be difficult to assess before it will be first time offered as it can fall into group of unexpressed or unaware needs (Dorner, Gorman, & Calvert, 2015). With staff expertise, where an individual approach to a patron’s needs would benefit participants and give opportunity to users we developed this programme that is affordable and easy to run and does not require a regular time commitment so it can be run as it is convenient for the institution and up to community demand.
